There’s a lot to love about Michael Gordon’s 1959 romantic comedy Pillow Talk. It is (arguably) the best outing of one of filmdom’s great couples, Doris Day and Rock Hudson. Plus this movie has the added bonus of Thelma Ritter, who received one of her six Oscar nominations for playing the boozy Alma who not only adds oodles in the comedy department, but offers an ear (and mouth) when presented the opportunity to help solve the stars’ problems. It is to Ritter and Alma that this month’s classic movie cocktail is dedicated.
Alma spends the entire length of Pillow Talk drinking, so we could have gone with any number of cocktails to dedicate to her, but since she drinks Rock Hudson under the table with a an entire bottle of vodka at one point while trying to help solve his problem…
…we thought the vodka-based Problem Solver would be most appropriate.
Here’s the recipe for the Purple Problem Solver from 1001 Cocktails:
– 1/2 oz vodka
– 1/2 oz rum
– 1/2 oz melon liqueur (midori, melloni…)
– 1/2 oz blue curacao liqueur
– 1/2 oz apple schnapps
– 1/2 oz peach schnapps
– 1/2 oz sweet and sour mix
– 1/2 oz grenadine syrup
– 1/2 oz apple juice
Add vodka, rum, midori, curacao, schnapps, and sweet and sour to an ice-filled hurricane glass. Fill with pineapple juice, add grenadine until purple, and serve.
Serve in “Hurricane Glass” with no garnish and enjoy…in moderation!
